The Design Story
peele chawalPeele ChawalSarvani calls her handmade rug “Peele Chawal” meaning “Yellow rice”. The colour yellow has dominated the carpet as she used the yellow yarn for minute designs. She used the barter system and collected her favourite colours’ yarns in exchange for the yarns she already had. She is a weaver who always weaves designs on her instincts. This shows in the random breaks in her manchaha. She said that she doesn’t think much but just changes the design whenever she feels like it. This shows her free-spirited nature. She drew her muse from a variety of things like flowers, mountains, pots, gates, etc. She has weaved jhunjhuna (A musical toy of an infant) on the bottom right. She has kept it simple and has weaved micro designs for her hand-knotted carpet. The minute designs she has weaved depict the rice fields which is why the hand-crafted rug is called “Peele Chawal” This carpet is why they say simplicity is elegance.
