The Design Story

bakhtiari, iran (c.1960)

Design Story
Reflecting the nomadic heritage of the Bakhtiari tribes from the rugged Zagros Mountains, the tribal weaving, dating circa 1960, showcases a distinctive design within its compact, modest size, indicative of portability. The field prominently features dual large central medallions, whose hearts evoke the shape of a large flower with substantial leaves. Between these focal points, floral elements spread across the field. Notably, abstract animal motifs appear on either side of the medallions, highlighted against a green ground. Other sections of the field are covered with a dynamic mix of leaves, grid patterns, and geometric motifs. The rug's palette creates strong visual contrast using brick red and deep navy blue, accented with white. Multiple borders frame the composition, with the main border presenting a stylised eight-pointed star flower pattern, a characteristic form of tribal decoration. This hand-knotted wool piece vividly reflects the artistic sensibilities of its Bakhtiari provenance.

City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions. Bakhtiari rugs display a rich, varied, and bold color palette, often using natural dyes, with prominent reds, blues, greens, and yellows enhancing their distinctive character.
