sashawan (c.1890)Antique 1890 Sashawan rug from the Caucasus, this piece is woven in a bold geometric design with a striking interplay of desert rose and cola tones. The central field features diamond-shaped motifs filled with stepped and latch-hook patterns, flanked by horizontal brown bands that add grounding balance to the composition. The borders are enriched with colorful geometric rosettes and repeating lozenges, highlighting the tribal artistry of Sashawan weaving. This rug stands out as a rare Sashawan example from the Caucasus, where the warm cola ground is dramatically contrasted by desert rose diamonds framed in rhythmic tribal borders.
