City Story
Mazandaran kilims, originating from the remote Mazandaran Province in north central Iran, have transitioned from obscure household items to revered minimalist artworks since their introduction to the West in the late 1990s. Bound by the Alborz Mountains and the Caspian Sea, this region produces a variety of kilims and "sofrehs," from striking black-and-white striped kilims reminiscent of Bauhaus art to brightly colored creations found in Kiasar and Chahar Dangeh villages. These handcrafted textiles, woven on narrow looms, served both utilitarian and decorative purposes, adorning walls, covering carpets, and functioning as blankets or tablecloths. Characterized by solid fields, horizontal stripes, and gradient ikat-like patterns, Mazandaran kilims are lauded for their collectible quality, minimalist aesthetic, and ability to complement diverse decors, making them a standout example of high art emerging from humble origins in Persia.
