Gurjeet Singh

During his residency at Jaipur Rugs, artist Gurjeet Singh extended his profound artistic narrative into an uncharted medium, the hand-knotted rug. Deeply rooted in personal expression, Gurjeet approached the residency not merely as an observer, but as an active listener and empathetic resident, fully immersing himself in the lives, rhythms, and intimate stories of Jaipur Rugs' artisans.

With sensitivity and openness, Gurjeet carried the emotional resonance of his own journey of identity and resilience into this new medium. Conversations with the artisans unfolded quietly amidst the soft hum of looms, each interaction layering depth and nuance. The intimacy of these shared moments allowed Gurjeet to translate deeply felt emotions and unspoken narratives into textured threads, crafting rugs that were simultaneously personal confessions and collective expressions.

For Gurjeet, the JResidency was not merely an artistic retreat; it was an emotional journey that enriched his practice, deepening his connection to craft and community. Every knot tied during this period became symbolic, a quiet testament to the intertwined resilience, identity, and humanity shared between artist and artisan. Through this residency, Gurjeet Singh didn't just explore a new medium; he created an emotional tapestry of lived experiences, woven together by shared understanding, empathy, and authenticity”.

About the Artist

Gurjeet Singh (b. 1994, Algon Kothi, Punjab) is a Chandigarh-based artist known for creating evocative textile sculptures inspired by personal narratives, conversations, and experiences. His unique artistic language emerges from early experiences observing his sisters’ embroidering and sewing at home, deeply influencing his innovative approach to textile art. He works across mediums including sculpture, painting, drawing, and sound and interactive performances. A recurring theme in his work is identity and how losses and love shape them, with a particular interest in LGBTQ stories. He uses textiles and found materials to bring the stories he works with viscerally to life for his audiences.

Gurjeet has exhibited widely, including two solo and multiple group exhibitions at Chemould CoLab (Mumbai), the Museum of Art and Photography (Bangalore), and the British Textile Biennale. His work has been acquired by Asian Art Museum and Kiran Nader Museum of Art. He is a CEEW & UN Foundation Next Generation India Fellow. His contributions to contemporary art have been recognised through INLAKS Fine Art Award 2021, 30 Under 30 by the Hindustan Times and Punjab Lalit Kala Academy, and he has received many grants including the travelling grant for Kochi Muziris Biennale, KHOJ Support Grant and Shrishti AIF Grant, Hyderabad.
