The Design Story
mann ki sairMann Ki SairSometimes, to go on a great journey, all you need to do is close your eyes and open your mind's eyes. Sumitra discovered this when she started crafting her Manchaha rug. She sat with her daughter Monika and fellow weaver Saraswati, each working on the side of the loom. The cool blue yarn inspired thoughts of water, waves, and mythical creatures. They pondered what it would be like if the worlds of land and water merged. This concept opened up a whole new realm for them to explore. The rug portrays a true fusion of land and underwater elements; all washed in a blue hue. Trees appear submerged, and three houses on the right side symbolize the three weavers. Sumitra and Saraswati crafted two large medallions emerging from pots on each side of the hand-knotted rug, signifying the torches that reflect their imaginations. Sumitra weaved lotus flowers, fishes, and butterflies, while Saraswati created abstract buildings, fields, and clouds—expressing their desires for their world. Sumitra included the brick industry at the top of the rug to honor her neighbors' work in those fields. It's heartwarming how she never forgets her surroundings, even in her imaginary world. Sumitra mentioned that she journeyed to a new world while crafting this Manchaha and brought her partners along on this adventure, so she named this beautiful Manchaha "Mann Ki Sair," which means "The Journey of Heart."
