The Design Story
bajraBajraThis rug was woven by three women working together, each bringing something of their own to the design. Anita Devi took inspiration from pearl millet farms, where she sometimes goes to work. She often returns to this pattern because she enjoys the detail it creates. For her, the repeating forms of pearl millet make a rug feel full and intricate. Sunita Devi added leheriya—wave-like patterns across the rug, bringing a movement into the design. Tanu, the youngest among them, followed both of them closely. She mixed colours and continued patterns inspired by what the older two were weaving, slowly finding her own place within the rug. On the left side, Anita Devi made two flowers. One for Sunita, and one for Tanu. A small gesture that showcased their friendship on the loom. The rug is a shared work, different hands, different ages, but all coming together in this carpet. At the end, they named the rug ‘Bajra’, Hindi for Pearl Millet.
