The Design Story
tyoharTyoharThis rug was woven by Krishna Devi and her two daughters-in-law, Suman and Geeta. From the beginning, they divided the rug into two parts. Krishna Devi worked on the right side, while Suman and Geeta wove together on the left. Krishna Devi stayed close to the patterns she knows well—waves, diamonds, and traditional forms she has woven for years. Her side feels steady and familiar. Suman and Geeta approached the rug differently. They kept trying new ideas as they worked. Mountains, flowers, and changing motifs slowly filled their side, making it feel more playful and experimental. There was a subtle competition going on between the mother-in-law and the daughters-in-law. However, as the rug reached the middle, the three of them began weaving together. At that time, the kite festival was approaching, and it naturally entered the design. The upper half of the rug fills with kites rising into the sky, bringing movement and celebration into the carpet. The rug holds all three of their personalities together—tradition, curiosity, and the feeling of a united celebration. This feeling made them name their Manchaha ‘Tyohar’ (Celebration).
