The Design Story
pahadi chandPahadi ChandThis was Mamta Devi’s first Manchaha. She felt nervous in the beginning, but also excited to try something of her own. When she started looking for ideas around her, the first thing that came to mind was the mountains she sees every day. So she decided to build the rug around them. Using diagonal movements and shifting patterns, she wove the feeling of mountains in an abstract way. While weaving, she reminisced about climbing those same hills to feed the goats. As the rug grew, other parts of her daily life entered too. She added an umbrella because the rug was woven during monsoon season, and a water-filled earthen pot, something closely tied to everyday village life. The colours of the yarn reminded her of mountains and rivers together. And because the rug was round, it slowly began to feel like a moon to her. That is how she named it, “Pahadi Chand” — Mountain Moon.
