The Design Story

kairi

Kairi
This Manchaha is a slice of Chota Devi’s childhood. When she was given the carpet order of a paisley shaped rug, she reminisced it as a raw mango (kairi in hindi) and then went back into her nostalgic childhood memories. She remembered being a little girl, playing all day in summers with her sisters, their eyes searching the mango tree near the village well. Someone would climb, someone would cheer, and soon enough, they'd sit in a circle, giggling, slicing the green kairis with pebbles. A pinch of red chilli, a sprinkle of salt—every bite felt like mischief shared and secrets kept. Years have passed, seasons have changed, but the taste of that moment lingers. In this rug, she has poured those memories—line by line, stitch by stitch. The zigzags of mango skin, the specks of chilli in red yarns, the soft warmth of summer earth. “I don’t get mangoes like that anymore,” she smiles, “but I still carry their taste with me.”
