The Design Story
katranKatranThis rug began with a memory. Yaadram, one of the weavers, suddenly thought back to his school days, when he used to love doing art projects. One of his favourites was kirigami, the Japanese art of cutting and folding paper. He remembered how a single sheet, when folded just right and snipped with care, could turn into flowers, birds, temples, even entire landscapes. He shared this with Beerbal, his fellow weaver at the loom. Together, they began to imagine what kirigami would look like if it were translated into yarn. The sharp, stepped shapes in the rug are like folds in paper — symmetrical, deliberate, but still full of play. The way the design radiates outward from the center feels like a paper cut-out being opened flat, revealing the patterns within. The design also resembled Beerbal’s original style of weaving. This Manchaha is a collaboration not just between two weavers, but between a past self and a present moment. A childhood art project turned into a woven art piece. Together, they named the Manchaha “Katran,” which means “Scraps or Cut Pieces,” both representing scraps of paper as well as memory.
