The Design Story
mila jula safarMila Jula SafarThis carpet is like a journey made from memories. Woven by five weavers inside prison, it brings together different moments from their lives — some real, some imagined. At the bottom, the weavers have made a map of a town: small houses, temples, paths. On the left bottom, a weaver has woven a well where his mother used to go to collect water in a mud pot. The middle of the rug is filled with little patterns of flowers, leaves, and butterflies. The middle right looks like water or reflections. That’s their way of showing memories — how they fade, but don’t disappear. At the top, soft colors and changing lines remind them of the sky they used to look at through bars. That sky gave them peace and hope. They said, “We can’t go anywhere, but seeing an open sky gave us a sense of freedom.” This rug brings five lives together into one story — a story of liberation, memory, and imagination. With this thought, they named their Manchaha “Mila Jula Safar,” meaning “A Shared Journey.”
