The Design Story
badal pe paonBadal Pe PaonAsif thought of freedom and liberation in confinement. Often staring outside his jail cell, he wished to step on the clouds and fly away. This feeling of freedom inspired him to weave “Badal Pe Paon”, which means, “Feet on the Cloud.” Taking inspiration from the abstract shapes of the clouds, he planned the designs of this carpet. He made cloud-shaped trees wondering about how clouds will look on the earth. With this thought, he made two triangles at both ends of the carpet with a joining link. This represents heaven and the earth and how clouds join both worlds together. With symmetrical leheriya (wavy) patterns, Asif enamored the look of this hand-knotted rug. He says that even if we cannot step on the clouds, we can step on this rug full of cloud motifs, which is comforting and dreamy.
