The Design Story
khichdiKhichdiRajveer, Kaluram, and Mukesh started weaving this rug in parts. Not knowing what to weave at first, they agreed to divide the rug into three parts and weave whatever they liked. These parts are filled with tiny tree motifs with diamond and zig-zag patterns. Mukesh has also woven a volleyball net on the right side of the rug, reminiscing about the time when he used to play with his friends every night. As the rug progressed, something shifted in the weavers. They wanted to create something new, so, breaking the divisions, they started weaving a large diamond shape together. They filled this shape with small diamond rows. They stopped before the shape was finished and started weaving zig-zag patterns. Rajveer laughed and said that it looks like hot khichdi (porridge) is being cooked in the large diamond pot, and the zig-zag patterns indicate the steam coming out. They finished the rug by dividing it into different parts again, each weaving what their hearts desired. Upon finishing the rug, Kaluram named it “Khichdi,” their go-to meal.
