The Design Story

bhaagte raste

Bhaagte Raste
This Manchaha rug, created by Asharam and Abdul inside Ajmer jail. The rug is divided into layers, almost like pages of a diary. Each block carries its own identity, symbolizing the diversity of life’s experiences. Asharam added the checkered patterns and rows of stripes, recalling the farming fields of his village divided into neat plots. Each block of color reminded him of sowing and harvesting seasons, the rhythm of village life he misses. Abdul contributed zigzags, keys, and floral dots. The zigzags are the busy roads of Ajmer city, where he once worked, while the keys are a reminder of the locked gates he sees daily, but also of the hope to open new doors someday. The little flowers are his way of adding softness to life inside the prison. And so, this Manchaha came to be called ‘Bhaagte Raste,’ (Rushing Paths) a reflection of the many roads of life—some remembered, some imagined, all moving forward with hope.
