The Design Story
khula aasmanKhula AasmanDuring the summer, the heat becomes unbearable in rural Rajasthan, and Asha Devi and her family move to the terrace to sleep under the open sky. Every night, she lies there watching the dark land below and the sky above, scattered with stars. This daily view became the starting point of the rug. The lower part of the rug reflects the land—dense, grounded, and textured. The upper half slowly opens up into lighter tones and scattered motifs, like a night sky. Dotted patterns suggest stars, while wavy and square motifs move through the surface. The rug is built in long horizontal lines, each carrying a different motif. Halfway through the weaving, Suraji joined Asha Devi to support her, and their shared effort is visible in the rhythm of the patterns. Made during peak summer, the rug carries the feeling of hot days, open nights, and the habit of looking up before sleeping. When Asha Devi finished weaving this Manchaha, she named it ‘Khula Aasman,’ meaning ‘An Open Sky.’
