The Design Story
paratParatRather than beginning with fixed motifs, this rug grew through careful decisions about colour, texture, and composition, a way of weaving that lies at the heart of KAVI x Manchaha. Known for her exceptional command over colour placement, Surji carefully balanced every shade so that each area felt connected to the next. Instead of relying on bold forms, she built the composition through subtle textures, layered yarns, and quiet transitions. Because of this, she named the Manchaha “Parat” (Layer). Her intricate patterns are inspired by crops in fields, and she has spread the colours according to her will. The result reminded Surji of water flowing on the ground, creating its own way. Despite being one of the most experienced artisans on the loom, Surji remains remarkably humble. She approaches every rug with patience and care, letting the weaving guide her decisions rather than forcing the design. The finished piece reflects her confidence—where years of craftsmanship are expressed not through complexity, but through restraint, balance, and an extraordinary sensitivity to colour.
