Design Story
This vintage Karaja rug from 1950 boasts striking Orange and Deep Navy tones, measuring 5'x 6'6" and featuring three distinct medallions characteristic of the Karaja tradition. Handcrafted in or around the village of Qarājeh in Iran's Qareh Dāgh region, south of the Azerbaijan border, this rug epitomizes the renowned craftsmanship of the area. The pattern, reminiscent of Caucasian carpets, showcases geometric medallions against a backdrop of vibrant hues. Notably, the rug's backside is exceptionally smooth due to a loosely inserted single cotton weft, a feature uncommon in neighboring weaving regions. Furthermore, heavy double-cord serging embellishes the sides, enhancing the rug's durability and aesthetics. Its foundation consists of cotton warp and either wool or cotton wefts, contributing to its sturdy construction. Crafted with handspun wool pile tightly knotted using a symmetrical or Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), this Karaja rug exemplifies both timeless elegance and meticulous artistry.

City Story
Karaja rugs, alternatively known as Gharajeh rugs, originate from the village of Qarājeh in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, showcasing intricate hand-woven wool craftsmanship. Renowned for their geometric motifs, particularly featuring three prominent medallions at the rug's center, Karaja rugs boast high-quality wool, long pile, vibrant hues, and finely detailed patterns. Their mid-size to room-sized dimensions reveal smooth undersides owing to a loosely inserted single weft, while heavy double binding adorns the sides. Though sharing similarities with other regional rugs like Heriz and Serapi, Karaja rugs possess distinct characteristics, notably highlighted by their signature three large geometric medallions. Often exhibiting madder red or indigo fields with parallel rows of repeating motifs, the rug's length and shape determine the medallion count. While resembling Kurdistan rugs in color schemes and texture, Karaja rugs differentiate themselves through meticulous weaving techniques.
