An antique Bakhtiari Khersak rug from Persia originates around 1950. This piece represents the Bakhtiari Khersak type, a style known for employing vibrant colors and characteristic geometric patterns. Its construction typically involves hand-knotting using high-quality, hand-spun wool, and rugs of this kind receive praise for their significant durability; the Khersak weave usually imparts a coarser, somewhat rustic texture. The rug exhibits a striking geometric medallion design overall. Its field possesses a distinctive structure, organized into a grid formed by small rectangles. Each of these rectangular sections contains a stylized diamond figure within it. This intricate arrangement uses shades of red, blue, beige, and brown, creating a pattern that actively engages the eye.
City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions.
