The Design Story
mann k baadalMann k BaadalMamta Devi's manchaha rug, "Mann k Baadal" (Clouds of the Mind), beautifully portrays the deep attachment an artist can develop towards their creation while spending countless hours on the loom hand-knotting each thread with utmost care. At the beginning of her Manchaha journey, Mamta was filled with excitement as she received a bundle of numerous blue and grey yarn of wool and silk. She reminisced about the colors of cloudy skies and started weaving the same. Just when she was making progress on her carpet, life intervened, and she had to take a break to go to her field for harvesting. During this time, she faced a creative block and felt blank. She started doubting her ability to weave. But this setback didn't deter her for long. After a few days of sadness, she bounced back with renewed energy, weaving even more diverse and beautiful clouds, finally completing her masterpiece. In the weaving process, Mamta became deeply attached to her rug. The thought of sending it away for finishing was difficult for her because she felt as if she was giving away a part of herself. She experienced this feeling for the first time and cherished it with love and hope to weave more Manchaha rugs in the future.
