The Design Story
khwabon ka mahalKhwabon Ka MahalSunita has always had a great love for Art. Be it in any form- dance, folk music, paintings, architecture. It is from these art forms that she draws her inspiration for her Manchahas. In this piece, she began by creating the border design, which features several elements, like flowers, bindis, and shakarpara, that she had seen in the old gates of Jaipur. On the way back she shared how she bought three water bottles for her children, a gift from her earnings for the first time. She shared the joyful reaction of her children after receiving the gift from their mother and how funny it was to see that they only drank water from those bottles in the beginning. It filled Sunita’s heart and she decided to capture that moment in her creation, hand-crafting 3 bottles. Sunita is so attached to her children. She gets emotional thinking of her daughter who would go to a new home someday after her marriage and and her emotions often get infused into her designs. She shared how she has woven intricate designs on the top of the carpet using wool and silk yarns that resembled the Chunari (Veil) her daughter would wear on her wedding day. Sunita’s dreams are woven into each thread of her hand-knotted rug, affectionately naming it, “Khwabon Ka Mahal” (Kingdom of Dreams).
