The Design Story

guldasta sundar

Guldasta Sundar
"Guldasta Sundar"—meaning "Beautiful Vase"—is a masterpiece born from the creative vision and unparalleled craftsmanship of Chhagan and Rajesh, two artisans working in Dausa Jail, Rajasthan. Over five years of collaboration, their shared dedication to weaving has resulted in their extraordinary Manchaha rugs. Chhagan, a quiet yet innovative artist, is known for his unreplicable designs. His philosophy is simple: each of his creations must be unlike any other, not just in beauty but in complexity. For this Manchaha, he sought to challenge himself to craft the most unique rug ever produced in Dausa Jail. With an eye for the intricate, he chose to partner with Rajesh, a diligent and equally passionate artisan, to bring this vision to life. The design of Guldasta Sundar is built on a striking duality. In the background, Chhagan and Rajesh wove an intricate web of wavy lines, which they called “Aar-Paar,” meaning “transparent.” This delicate and detailed pattern was created to evoke a shimmering effect, as if light were dancing across the surface of the rug, inviting the viewer to linger and explore its every detail. On this shimmering backdrop, they layered a bold, standout motif—a beautiful flower vase, the centerpiece of the rug. The contrast between the delicacy of the “Aar-Paar” lines and the boldness of the floral design—a blend of the subtle and the striking. The creation of this rug took five months of dedicated weaving, with every knot, every pattern, an ode to the artisans' patience and love for their craft. As the rug began to take shape, it grabbed attention from their fellow inmates, who admired its complexity and predicted that it would reach a prestigious platform, perhaps even winning an award. The encouragement and admiration of their peers fueled Chhagan and Rajesh to continue refining their work with unwavering focus and passion. When the rug was finally completed, it left even Chhagan in awe. The sense of disbelief soon transformed into pride, as he and Rajesh marveled at their accomplishment. They had indeed created something magical.
