The Design Story
baine ke rangBaine Ke RangTejkumar’s creation, “Baine Ke Rang,” is inspired by the rich artistic culture found in village life. He observed that despite the slow pace of life in the village, residents are always engaged in some form of creation. Some people craft mats from old clothes, others make brooms from date tree leaves, and many are involved in embroidery. A prominent item found in every home is the humble ‘Baina,’ a beautifully hand-made fan. Tejkumar noticed how essential the hand fan is in village homes, even with the availability of electricity. The Baina serves both function and emotion. It gently fans a small child sleeping on a summer morning, offers relief to guests, is a part of the discussions during village council meetings under a tree, and helps shoo away flies. Inspired by this meaningful object, Tejkumar decided to weave a rug as a tribute to the hand fan. He incorporated diamond motifs and stark color contrasts, drawing inspiration from his own Baina, and named it “Baine Ke Rang” – The Colors of Baina.
