The Design Story
taal melTaal MelInviting into their village, Gita, Shilu and Divya open the doors for us with this Manchaha that beautifully tells stories of their lives in the village. They have skillfully hand-knotted the granular details of rural life showing the vibrant yellow marigolds, coriander, and peanut leaves that symbolise the bountiful harvest at the village and their deep connection with Mother Earth. The weavers have put kites in the middle of the rug, temples to their right and tridents that beautifully sum up the importance of freedom, faith and strength in their lives. While they said that they used the light and dark-coloured yarns to create a beautiful contrast, we can’t help but see how it also mirrors life’s hope that shines through challenging, dark times. Inspired by the borders of sarees, these artisans have woven an eye-catching border, neatly tying together the threads of their lives in this woven story of balance and harmony, known as Taal-Mel.
