The Design Story
sagar kinaareSagar KinaareThree women. One loom. A shared heartbeat. Prem, the most experienced, sits with quiet authority—her hands seasoned by years of weaving. Beside her are Usha, her daughter-in-law and Sona her daughter who are her students, and now, her equals. This is their fourth Manchaha together. They never work alone—“Carpet banani ho toh saath mein hi banegi” (If we’re making a carpet, it has to be together), they laugh. It's not just about weaving; it's about weaving together. This rug was born in the season of Sawan, the monsoon, or as they call it, "Leheriya ka Mausam". The rains bring joy, color, and wavy leheriya sarees that women love wearing. Naturally, waves filled the loom, rippling across the design like the rhythm of falling rain. Then came Prem’s signature, shakkarpara (diamonds). But not just one kind—each a little unique, each telling its own tale. Despite three weavers working side by side, their designs never touched, never clashed. That’s the unspoken harmony of family. And just when the rug was flowing into something beautiful, a fourth thread slipped in as a surprise. Neetu, Prem’s elder daughter, arrived home for a short visit. She wasn’t part of the plan, but how could she resist the loom? She asked about the designs so far, sat beside them, and stitched her imagination into the story. To her, the waves and diamonds became a river—alive with meaning. She added two little fish swimming through the current, fetching grains from visitors. Then came tiny pebbles below, the kind people take home as tokens. Quietly, Neetu stitched everything together that completed the conversation on the rug. They named it “Sagar Kinaare”—By the Ocean’s Edge. A celebration of sharing ideas, monsoon memories, and the gentle love that flows between women who create, together.
