The Design Story
panchiPanchiSaroj weaves in a place where the fields stretch endlessly, and her loom is never truly alone. Her husband drives trucks and is away for long stretches of time, so in his absence, the birds keep her company. Birds come from everywhere—small ones fluttering close, and sometimes peacocks visit, leaving feathers for her to decorate her loom. They perch on terraces, wander across the ground, and soar through the sky, filling the space around her loom with movement and sound. Wherever Saroj looks, she sees birds, and she has tried to capture this dynamic scene in her Manchaha. Saroj sets out food and water for them, including two little pots that she has woven into the rug. She often expresses her wish to be a bird herself, free to travel, roam far, and return easily. Until then, she enjoys the company of the birds as she weaves.
