The Design Story
kharidiKharidiSantosh Devi is an experienced weaver who often finds ideas in things most people pass by—cracks in a wall, a line of ants, the movement of water at sunset. In this rug, her inspiration came from a simple day in the market. While shopping with her children, she noticed how clothes were stacked in every shop. Piles arranged in rows, folded, and placed one over the other. It was an ordinary sight, but it stayed with her. She brought that memory to the loom. In an abstract way, the rug begins to look like shelves filled with fabric. Blocks and layers sit next to each other, not perfectly even, but naturally placed—like stacks that have been handled through the day. At first, it may not be obvious. But once you see it from this point of view, the design shifts. The patterns start to make sense, and the whole rug feels different. That is where Shantosh’s strength lies. When she was done weaving, she named her Manchaha ‘Kharidi’, meaning ‘Shopping’.
