The Design Story
gwaliorGwaliorLaxmi Devi made this Manchaha as a reflection of water and farmland—water, which is scarce for her, and farms, which surround her home in abundance. At the bottom, she has woven flowing rivers. She remembers visiting the Ganges as a child, and that feeling stays in this part of the rug. Within the water, a small boat moves quietly. On the right side, the scene changes. A small hill rises with trees spread across it. She describes this as a place where a cowherd rests in the afternoon while his goats graze nearby. There is a sense of stillness here. On the hill, she has also added a small hut for the cowherd. Close by, a road appears with a car passing through—something she sees often from her home. In the middle, a hot air balloon floats above. It feels like a wish—to rise above and see everything at once, the water, the land, and the life around it. The rug brings together what she has seen, remembered, and wished. Living among farms, these scenes come naturally to her. They are not separate ideas, but parts of one place. She named this rug “Gwalior,” after the ‘cowherd’ who quietly holds this world together.
