The Design Story
ujjwal"UjjwalThe pattern of Dhafali Devi's Ujjwal rug signifies her love for her family and how she embraces each one of them. Along with the 'Leheriya' (a wavy pattern famous in Rajasthan), she has included other elements from her home surroundings. Weaver designer Dhafali has chosen the‘Leheriya’ pattern (a wavy pattern popular in Rajasthan) to playfully knot motifs on this rug. She loves this pattern and often uses it on her rugs, as it reminds her of her cultural traditions. This rug truly depicts her free-spirited attitude as it holds fun elements like her father-in-law’s spectacles, turnips that she decided to weave while she was cooking in the kitchen, and her child’s Rubik’s cubes. On the top right corner of the rug, Dhafali has woven “loosely hanging glasses” of a “Dadaji”, which is a Hindi word for grandfather. One day while she was standing in her kitchen and thinking about her rug design, her eyes fell on turnips. Naturally she knotted these turnips into her rug and surrounded them with butterflies. Other elements from village life like earthen pots (Kalash), raw mangos (Kairi) and shakkarpara (Breakfast snack) can also be seen on this rug.
