The Design Story
jamwa ramgarh bandhJamwa Ramgarh Bandh“Jamwa Ramgarh Bandh” is a memory-led Manchaha carpet by Anju Devi, rooted in the landscape of her natal village, Jamwa Ramgarh, and her maternal home near Sirjoli. Both places lie close to one another and share a common water history shaped by the Jamwa Ramgarh dam.The carpet visualizes the dam as it existed in Anju’s memory, when water flowed with force and waterfalls were visible across the landscape. The composition is structured around continuous, zigzagging forms that evoke the movement of flowing water. At the center, a bridge marks a viewpoint from which the dam could once be observed in its entirety. The color palette is intentionally restrained, dominated by earthy tones that reflect the present condition of the dam, which has now dried. Traces of blue appear intermittently, representing remnants of water that survive only in fragments. These visual shifts translate the transition of the landscape. A filled earthen pot (matka) is integrated into the composition, symbolizing storage, continuity, and domestic resilience. While the dam no longer holds water, Anju Devi notes that access to drinking water in her life today remains stable, creating a layered narrative of loss, adaptation, and survival. This Manchaha functions as both a personal record and an environmental reflection. By weaving memory into material, Anju Devi raises a larger question about disappearing water bodies and changing ecological realities, transforming a local experience into a wider social and environmental dialogue.
