The Design Story
badalta samayBadalta SamayThis hand-knotted rug, created by inmates-turned-artists Sushil and Sonu, holds a story told in reverse — from healing to memory. At the bottom, soft colors and open patterns reflect a sense of calm and quiet—the present moment, where both artists have found peace through patience and purpose. Moving upward, the design becomes playful and expressive, with scattered flowers and diamonds representing moments of reflection, joy, and the people they hold in memory. These memories allowed them to find a reason for living and hold on to something warm during the cold times. Near the top, the rug becomes heavier and more layered. The forms are less clear, and the palette is more muted. This section speaks of the past: mistakes, confusion, and the silence they carried before change began. Through every line and knot, this rug holds the personal journey of two individuals reclaiming their story. Upon finishing the rug, they named it “Badalta Samay,” meaning “Changing Time” to portray their own transformation over time.
