The Design Story
saharaSaharaThis was Raju's very first Manchaha, and she remembers beginning it with a lot of hesitation. Every night before going to bed, she would think about what she should weave the next day. She wanted her first rug to be special but was unsure where to begin. Looking around her village, she found her answer in the mountains that surround her home. Instead of weaving them exactly as they appear, Raju chose to interpret them in her own way. She broke the mountain ranges into abstract shapes, layered textures, and geometric forms, creating a composition that feels both modern and deeply personal. As the rug grew, so did her confidence. What started with uncertainty slowly turned into excitement, and she began experimenting with different patterns, soft colour transitions, and intricate details. For Raju, this Manchaha marks the beginning of believing in her own creativity. At the end, she said that the mountains became her ‘support’, or in Hindi “Sahara,” which ultimately became the name of the rug.
