The Design Story
dwarDwarFor this rug, Dhafali Devi embraced the KAVI x Manchaha philosophy by moving beyond familiar motifs and exploring how memories could be expressed through textures, colour, and abstract forms. She enjoyed experimenting with blended yarns, scattered dots, and layered surfaces, allowing the composition to grow naturally as she wove. At the bottom left of the rug, she reinterpreted a pattern inspired by a traditional dhurrie, giving it a more contemporary character. On the right, she wove the entrance gate of her village, a place she holds close to her heart. She shared that the gate is covered with blooming bougainvillea during summers, making it one of her favourite sights. She named this Manchaha “Dwar” (gateway) as a tribute to the gate. As the rug neared completion, she added small clouds across the sky. For her, they represent the wait before the rains arrive, a familiar feeling in village life, filled with hope and anticipation. The finished rug brings together fragments of memory, observation, and imagination, woven into a landscape that feels both deeply personal and quietly contemporary.
