The Design Story
sarouk, iran (c.1940)Design Story
From 1940, this antique Sarouk rug from Iran. Its deep navy blue field with dark denim for a dense array of stylized floral motifs, including palmettes, blossoms, and intricate vinery. Rendered in a painterly blend of coral, soft pinks, blues, and earthy shades, this organic abundance creates a dynamic, textured effect. The border with continuous patterns of stylized floral elements and geometric forms, harmoniously framing the design.
City Story
Sarouk, from Ferahan, is a village in west-central Iran famous for its rugs, especially their all-over floral designs and vibrant colors. They have an asymmetrical knot that weavers use. Their designs often show patterns like curving vines, palmettes and rosettes, and a central medallion.
Sarouk rugs grew popular in Western countries, especially America, desired for large, grand homes due to their strength and thickness. To enrich colors for the Western Market, "Painted Sarouks" emerged, treated with special washes and additional dyes. Their all-over floral patterns, common since the 1900s, display clever, fresh designs. Each flower varies slightly, creating a natural, balanced feel. Bold red and blue choices make designs stand out.
