The Design Story
bakhtiari, iran (c.1920)Design Story
Hand-knotted using durable wool and rich natural dyes, an early 20th-century antique Bakhtiari rug from Persia's Zagros Mountains (circa 1920) features a bold geometric design. The field motifs powerfully display an all-over lattice of large, interconnected diamond medallions with distinctly edges. Within each large diamond, intricate secondary geometric forms, often incorporating latch-hook elements, add layers of detail. A varied palette defines this pattern, where hues like swamp green, deep charcoal, reds, blues, and ivory create strong contrasts. For the border motifs, an exceptionally narrow band frames the field, comprised of simple, repeating geometric blocks in alternating light and dark tones.
City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions. Bakhtiari rugs display a rich, varied, and bold color palette, often using natural dyes, with prominent reds, blues, greens, and yellows enhancing their distinctive character.
