The Design Story
zarand kilim (c.1920)Antique Zarand Kilim with Tree Medallion Design, Iran, circa 1920 Red oxide dominates the field with a vertical sequence of dark brown medallions. Each medallion encloses stylized tree motifs, symbolic of growth and fertility, rendered in ivory and soft ochre. The stepped outlines and angular drawing emphasize the geometric clarity typical of Zarand weaving. The border is framed with alternating star-shaped rosettes and diamond devices set against an ivory ground, flanked by serrated guard stripes in earthy browns. These motifs echo the tribal aesthetic of western Iran while enclosing the powerful tree medallion field.
