The Design Story

haathon ki baat

Haathon ki Baat
Godhi Devi is an experienced artist from Aaspura, Rajasthan. Her loom is open for all - whoever wants to learn weaving or sit with her, she welcomes everyone. In this rug, Godhi Devi was accompanied by Sumitra Devi, her neighbour. Together, they have created a world of their own. In the beginning, they started weaving different designs in different patterns. Whatever came into their minds - flowers, plants, branches - they wove it. A little upwards, Godhi Devi wove the lamp of Aladdin. She was inspired by the Aladdin movie that was playing in the T.V. In the middle of the rug, they have woven three huge diamond shapes and wavy patterns that gave the rug the vibe of the famous kite flying festival. At the top, while Sumitra Devi continued with wavy patterns and flower motifs, Godhi Devi showed her years of experience. She mixed yarns to mix colours and wove an intricate design that gives the carpet an ombre effect. Somewhere, there is a moment from a film. Somewhere, a glimpse of everyday life. And somewhere, simply a feeling they followed. This rug is a conversation between the two of them without words. At the end, they named the Manchaha ‘Haathon ki Baat’, meaning ‘Talks of the Hands’.
