The Design Story

titli udi punjab

Titli Udi Punjab
Woven by a mother-daughter duo, this Manchaha tells a unique story of the daughter Bugali and her love for the Indian sweet Rasgulla. Born in Punjab, Bugali loved eating colorful Rasgullas time and again. However, she said that they are hard to find in Rajasthan. Also, she was fascinated by the little butterflies that visited her home. She thought that if she had wings like the butterflies, she would fly to Punjab to devour the colorful Rasgullas. With this thought, Bugali and her mother Meera Devi have woven a rug filled with butterfly and round Rasgulla motifs. They have also woven spoons with which they will eat the sweet. Interestingly, Bugali also tried to weave some unique design at the right side of the rug but it didn’t turn out according to her plan. She jokingly said that the outcome looks like half men are dancing. With such an amusing story, the weavers also gave this Manchaha an amusing name - “Titli Udi Punjab,” meaning “Butterfly Flew to Punjab.”
