The Design Story
meri jhopadiMeri JhopadiBefore starting this rug, Anuradha reflected on her journey and how far she had come. As an expert Manchaha weaver, Anuradha typically follows her intuition while weaving, without planning a design in advance. However, for this rug, she knew a special design motif that she wanted to include. This was the first rug she began weaving while her new home was under construction. Before this, Anuradha and her family lived in a small hut, which she lovingly depicted as a tiny square at the center of the rug. She also wove patterns inspired by the wildflowers in her surroundings. Anuradha shared how it is through her hard work and weaving skills that she has been able to support her family and create a brighter future. The same art that sustained them is now giving them a better home, a reminder of how much they’ve achieved. Anuradha had so many ideas for designs that she decided to divide the rug into two sections to fit them all. When the rug was finished, she felt a deep sense of pride and named it “Meri Jhopadi,” meaning “My Hut,” as a heartfelt tribute to her journey and the life she’s built.
