The Design Story
saathSaathKani Devi is very shy and almost always weaves with her husband, Chote Lal. In this Manchaha, they worked with a soft, melting leheriya (waves) style. The patterns move gently across the rug, without sharp breaks. Kani Devi shared that sometimes leaves, sometimes the play of light and shadow, they took inspiration from whatever they saw in their surroundings. They both have allotted sides on the loom, each taking a different section. Still, their work never looks divided. The patterns flow into each other without a clear boundary. When asked for the reason for this unified design, they shared that both of them have been weaving together for more than 20 years. Over time, they have picked up each other’s way of working. Even without discussing the design, they often end up weaving similar forms. This rug shows that ease. Two people working separately, but thinking in the same direction, which inspired the name of the rug ‘Saath’, meaning ‘Companionship’.
