The Design Story
bijukaBijukaLiving amidst farmlands, Saroj Devi draws most of her inspiration from the world around her. This Manchaha is a reflection of the fields she sees every day and the simple beauty of village life. She began by weaving different patches of farmland, each filled with its own textures and patterns. Winding paths run through the rug, dividing one field from another, just like the narrow trails that connect villages. Around these fields, she added everyday elements from rural life—mud pots, torans (traditional door decorations), trees, and geometric forms inspired by the landscape. Across the rug, Saroj also wove animals grazing in the fields and small plant motifs that bring the countryside to life. The layered composition feels like looking at a village from above, where farms, hills, and pathways blend into one another. The most special detail is hidden near the top of the rug. Saroj has woven a tiny ‘bijuka’ (scarecrow) standing in the fields. Laughing, she shared that when the farmlands stretch endlessly, the scarecrow feels like her companion, silently watching over the crops. That small figure became the heart of the rug and inspired its name.
