The Design Story
mitha khazanaMitha KhazanaBabulal and Kalli Devi, an experienced husband-wife duo, began this Manchaha with something close to their heart— laddoos (round Indian sweets). They wove them at the start and joked that they had “locked” them in the rug so no one could eat them. From there, the design moved into deeper layers. They mixed yarns and colours carefully to build a dense surface. For them, this became the deep ocean. From there, a slanted slab cuts through the rug, which they often do as their signature design move. It breaks the straight flow and adds direction. Towards the top, the patterns open up into waves. The lines become lighter and more fluid, like water moving on the surface. When they finished, they described it jokingly that the whole carpet looked like— waves at the top, deep ocean below, and inside it, their treasure: laddoos, the favourite sweet in their family. With this, they named the rug ‘Mitha Khazana’, meaning ‘Sweet Treasure’.
