The Design Story
aanganAanganEvery morning begins in the “Aangan” (front yard). Sugni Devi wakes before the village stirs, sweeping the front yard clean, sprinkling water to settle the dust, aligning the world before the day begins. The house comes alive slowly, earthen pots washed and set out to dry, grains sorted, the first fire lit for cooking. These quiet rituals shape her sense of order and care. When she weaves, these moments return as memory. The matka motifs rise on the loom like familiar companions, round, steady, holding nourishment and patience. The triangle paths echo the way she arranges her courtyard. Sugni Devi has also woven the time during festivals like Diwali, when the Aangan transforms, rangoli is drawn by hand, walls are adorned with ‘bandarwal’ (decorative hangings), and lights are put gently in small lamps. This rug carries that rhythm: of daily routine, of tending and arranging, of a home that is made beautiful not once, but every single day.
