The Design Story
tabriz, iran (c.1970)Design Story
This triple medallion open field design Tabriz rug, circa 1970, from northwestern Iran, is hand-knotted. Its silver grey field is largely open, providing a contrasting ground for three striking, vertically aligned medallions, often detailed in vibrant red lacquer and intricate patterns. The main border is commonly a bold red lacquer color with geometric or stylized repeating motifs, flanked by multiple narrower guard borders with polychrome abstract motifs.
City Story
Tabriz, in Northwestern Iran, is a historic and globally significant center for rug weaving, with traditions from the 16th-century Safavid dynasty. Artisans craft these world-renowned Persian rugs from high-quality wool, silk, and often cotton for the foundation. Each piece is meticulously hand-knotted using the symmetrical knot. Master weavers like Haji Jalili, famed for fine weaving and earthy colors, remain an inspiration. The vibrant palette, including reds, blues, and ivories, utilizes both natural and recently synthetic dyes.
Tabriz rugs feature diverse designs. Common are the central medallion, often with floral or geometric surrounds, and motifs like the grand, architectural Gomba medallion or the classic Herati (flower in a diamond with leaf figures). Some display a floral all-over design, a continuous network of blossoms and vines without a central medallion. Pictorial designs depict realistic scenes(historical events, hunting, daily life. Tabriz prayer rugs specifically feature a mihrab design, a niche-shaped arch symbolizing prayer direction. Tabriz weavers continue these revered traditions while adapting to contemporary demands.
