The Design Story
sashawan (c.1920)This antique Sashawan runner, woven circa 1920 in the Caucasus region, presents a geometric design in a deep ebony and charcoal ground. The field is filled with a dense diagonal lattice of stylized motifs in ivory and terracotta, creating a rhythmic and almost textural movement across its length. The play of light and dark tones enhances the bold linear geometry while preserving a sense of balance and harmony. The borders frame the field with layered bands: an inner striped guard of diagonal bars, a secondary band in blue and ivory, and an outer border of alternating star-like motifs in ivory, ochre, and terracotta. Together they provide both structure and ornament, lending the runner a refined tribal character.
