The Design Story
matkaMatkaLaxmi Devi is known for telling stories through her rugs. But in this Manchaha, she began with uncertainty. The yarns she received were quite similar, and she wasn’t sure what to make. So she started experimenting. She mixed the yarns and placed them in careful, detailed ways. Slowly, familiar patterns began to appear, traditional designs emerging through her hands without a fixed plan. At the centre of the rug, a strong image takes shape. A large water pot rests on two hands. This comes from a memory she carries. Earlier, women in her village would walk to nearby rivers and wells to collect water. Once the pots were filled, they would help each other lift them onto their heads. It was never done alone. That moment of support stayed with her. The rug holds both the importance of water in a dry land and the quiet strength of women who shared the work. With this beautiful imagery and reminiscence, she named the rug ‘Matka’ - an ode to the ‘Water Pot’.
