The Design Story

shaam mastani

Shaam Mastani
Mahaveer’s loom is placed just outside his home. From here, he watches the day slowly change. Mornings begin quietly, afternoons move at a steady pace, and by evening, everything starts to slow down. While his wife goes out to work at construction sites, Mahaveer stays home, taking care of their two children. He cooks, helps with homework, and keeps returning to his loom in between daily tasks. This rug was woven during those evening hours. As the sun began to set, the sky changed its colours - soft oranges turned into dusty pinks, then came deeper shades of rust and calm purples. Mahaveer followed these colours on the loom, placing them one after the other, like the passing of time. He enjoys watching the sunset while weaving, letting the day settle. A small radio plays beside him, filling the space with old Bollywood songs he loves. Inspired by one such song, he named this rug “Shaam Mastani,” meaning ‘a charming evening.’
