The Design Story

aandhi

Aandhi
This rug was woven by three women who spent almost every day together at the loom, working through ideas, conversations, and small disagreements along the way. Anita Devi enjoys making detailed patterns. She often takes inspiration from pearl millet farms, where she used to work. In this rug, she suggested weaving something inspired by a sandstorm. She wanted the surface to feel dense and layered, the way moving sand looks when it spreads through the air. Through zigzag patterns, small motifs, and layered designs, they created a rug that carries the feeling of sand moving through a desert village. In the middle of the rug, Manju Devi added a small mountain. She says people often recognise their village because of that mountain, and anyone coming there is guided by it. As the rug grew, each of them added their own thoughts and patterns. The process was not always smooth. Sometimes they argued, sometimes they shared things they wouldn’t tell anyone else. That closeness stayed in the rug too. By the end, they named the carpet ‘Aandhi,’ meaning ‘Storm’.
