The Design Story
raat-dinRaat-DinRaat–Din (Night and Day) is the collaborative creation of Hariram and Chotu, a senior–junior duo whose bond at the loom is as seamless as the design they weave. In this piece, the artists bring two time zones into one unified canvas. he darker sections, made using Hariram’s mixed-yarn technique, symbolize the night sky, featuring soft moonlight and scattered stars. In contrast, the lighter areas depict desert landscapes, with textures that evoke a sense of openness and calm. At the top of the rug shines a cheerful burst of colour—Chotu’s creative contribution. He saved all the bright shades for the final stretch, excited to place them together, and the result is a lively, abstract sunset. Threaded throughout the rug is a flowing, continuous motif which is Hariram’s signature design. He calls it “the village lights”: the memory of mountain lamps glowing at dusk, appearing like a suspended string of stars. For him, this pattern is home. Raat–Din is an ode to beauty in dualities—light and dark, youth and experience, brought together through a partnership defined by trust, shared vision, and the timeless rhythm of their craft.
