The Design Story
kudaratiKudaratiThis Manchaha was woven by Suraj Jatav. For this rug, he turned to the nature to take inspiration and wove two things — mountains and water. The upper half of the carpet is built like a range of mountains. Suraj created the peaks using sharp triangular layers and repeating diamond patterns. The colours shift softly, like light changing on rocky surfaces. Some sections are dense with small motifs, while others are quieter, giving the mountains depth. Below the mountains, the design changes completely. The lower half becomes a flowing river. Suraj used the leheriya pattern — the zig-zag lines often seen in Rajasthani textiles — to show the movement of water. The lines run across the surface like waves, bending and shifting as if the river is moving through the land. For Suraj, nature is the biggest inspiration. Mountains, rivers, wind, and land often find their way into his Manchahas. Instead of copying what he sees, he turns these memories into patterns and rhythm on the loom. In this rug, the mountain stands still while the river keeps moving below it — two parts of the same landscape, woven together in one carpet. He shared that this carpet is ‘Kudarati’, meaning ‘Natural’, which ultimately became the name of the rug.
